El pastor de la puerta

Polly se levanta muy temprano. Berta quiere enseñarle algo especial. Se sientan en la muralla, encima de la puerta vieja, y esperan. Entonces Polly oye muchas campanillas. Un rebaño de ovejas aparece por la esquina y pasa por la puerta estrecha.

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Detrás de las ovejas camina un pastor con un bastón de madera y un sombrero de paja. A su lado camina un perro blanco muy grande, un mastín. El perro parece tranquilo y serio. Las ovejas conocen el camino. Llevan muchos años caminando por aquí cada mañana.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Polly baja volando y pregunta si puede ir también. El perro grande lo piensa. Después hace un pequeño gesto con la cabeza. Juntos suben todos la montaña, pasan las últimas casas, hasta los prados verdes y altos sobre la garganta.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

Se quedan allí todo el día. Las ovejas comen hierba. El perro duerme con un ojo abierto. Por la tarde todos caminan a casa. Polly va montada en la primera oveja. Por un rato, es parte del rebaño.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.
