The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Polly si alza molto presto. Berta vuole mostrarle qualcosa di speciale. Si siedono sul muro sopra la vecchia porta e aspettano. Poi Polly sente tante piccole campane. Un gregge di pecore gira l'angolo e passa attraverso la porta stretta.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Dietro le pecore cammina un pastore con un bastone di legno e un cappello di paglia. Accanto a lui cammina un cane bianco molto grande, un mastino. Il cane sembra calmo e serio. Le pecore conoscono la strada. Camminano qui ogni mattina da molti anni.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

Polly scende in volo e chiede se può venire anche lei. Il grande cane ci pensa. Poi fa un piccolo cenno con la testa. Insieme salgono tutti sulla montagna, oltre le ultime case, fino ai prati verdi sopra la gola.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.

Restano lì tutto il giorno. Le pecore mangiano l'erba. Il cane dorme con un occhio aperto. Di sera tornano tutti a casa. Polly viaggia sulla schiena della prima pecora. Per un po', fa parte del gregge.
