The Shepherd at the Gate

Polly gets up very early. Berta wants to show her something special. They sit on the wall above the old gate and wait. Then Polly hears many small bells. A flock of sheep comes around the corner and pours through the narrow gate.

Polly se lève très tôt. Berta veut lui montrer quelque chose de spécial. Elles s'assoient sur la muraille, au dessus de la vieille porte, et attendent. Puis Polly entend beaucoup de petites cloches. Un troupeau de brebis arrive au coin de la rue et passe par la porte étroite.

Behind the sheep walks a shepherd with a wooden stick and a straw hat. Next to him walks a very big white dog, a mastiff. The dog looks calm and serious. The sheep know the way. They have walked here every morning for many years.

Derrière les brebis marche un berger avec un bâton de bois et un chapeau de paille. À côté de lui marche un très grand chien blanc, un mâtin. Le chien a l'air calme et sérieux. Les brebis connaissent le chemin. Elles marchent ici chaque matin depuis de longues années.

Polly flies down and asks if she can come too. The big dog thinks about it. Then he gives a small nod. Together they all walk up the mountain, past the last houses, to the high green meadows above the gorge.

Polly descend et demande si elle peut venir aussi. Le grand chien réfléchit. Puis il fait un petit signe de tête. Ensemble, ils montent tous la montagne, au delà des dernières maisons, jusqu'aux hautes prairies vertes au dessus de la gorge.

They stay there all day. The sheep eat grass. The dog sleeps with one eye open. In the evening they all walk home. Polly rides on the back of the first sheep. For a little while, she is part of the flock.

Ils y restent toute la journée. Les brebis mangent de l'herbe. Le chien dort avec un œil ouvert. Le soir, ils rentrent tous à la maison. Polly voyage sur le dos de la première brebis. Pendant un petit moment, elle fait partie du troupeau.
