La mañana llegó oliendo a resina y a polvo templado. Polly avanzaba con cuidado entre el matorral bajo de color verde plata que se aferra a la ladera, una alfombra de hojas endurecidas por el sol y la sal.
El romero y el tomillo la rozaban al pasar, soltando su aroma en oleadas que la seguían ladera arriba. Los botánicos hablan de esta montaña como de un único gran jardín, y empezaba a merecer el título.
Cientos de especies silvestres se apiñan en estas laderas, y unas cuantas apenas existen en ningún otro rincón de la Tierra. Cada grieta de la roca parecía guardar algo que prosperaba en silencio.
Un palmito enano se había encajado entre dos peñascos, y los pinos se asomaban sobre la piedra clara como si quisieran mirar el mar. Polly se acomodó a su sombra y dejó que el viento entre las ramas hablara por ella.
