叩かれて、ほとんど消えてしまうまで

小さな裏通りを進むと、一つの扉が工房へと続いていた。中では重い機械が一秒に一回ほどのリズムで、ドスンドスンと鳴り続けていた。職人は四角い紙が高く積まれた台の間、低い作業台に座っていた。紙と紙の間には、それぞれ金の薄片が挟まれている。あまりに薄いので、扉が開いただけで揺れ動いた。

Down a small side street, a door opened onto a workshop. Inside, a heavy machine made a steady thud about once a second. An artisan sat at a low bench between tall stacks of square paper. Between every two sheets of paper lay a piece of gold. It was so thin that it moved when the door opened.

金沢は日本の金箔の、およそ九十九パーセントを作っている。それを四百年も続けてきた。その数字は信じがたいほどだ。硬貨ほどの大きさの金が、畳一枚を覆えるほどの箔に広がる。仕上がった箔の厚さは、一ミリの一万分の一ほど。光さえも通り抜けてしまう。

Kanazawa makes about ninety-nine percent of all the gold leaf in Japan. It has done this for four hundred years. The numbers are hard to believe. A piece of gold the size of a coin can become one sheet big enough to cover a whole floor mat. The finished leaf is about one ten-thousandth of a millimetre thick. Light can pass through it.

この工芸がここで育った理由の一つは、気候にある。金箔は乾いた、動きのある空気を嫌う。この街は湿気が多く、雪が降り、何ヶ月も空気が静かなままだ。紙も金と同じくらい大切だ。手作業で作られたその紙の表面が、箔の仕上がりを決める。工房は紙の作り方を秘密にしている。

Weather is part of the reason the craft grew here. Gold leaf hates dry, moving air. This city is damp, snowy, and still for months. The paper matters as much as the gold. It is made by hand, and its surface decides how the leaf will look. Workshops keep their paper secret.

これほど薄い箔は、手で触れることができない。竹の道具を使って、椀や柱や扉へと運ばれていく。ポリーはじっと立ち尽くし、羽根一枚さえ動かさなかった。

Such thin leaf cannot be touched by hand. Bamboo tools lift it onto bowls, pillars, and doors. Polly stood very still and did not move a feather.
