Lungo la costa del Mare del Nord c'è un luogo strano e meraviglioso chiamato Wattenmeer. Due volte al giorno il mare si ritira dalla terra, allontanandosi per chilometri e lasciando il fondale aperto al cielo. Quello che era acqua profonda al mattino diventa un'ampia pianura lucente nel pomeriggio. I camminatori si radunano al bordo, si tolgono le scarpe e si avventurano sul fondo del mare.

Poi la marea cambia. L'acqua ritorna veloce, molto più veloce di quanto la gente si aspetti, correndo in linee argentate attraverso le distese. Ecco perché nessuno cammina qui da solo. La guida conosce i sentieri sicuri e le ore giuste, così il gruppo raggiunge di nuovo la terraferma prima che il mare riprenda il suo fondo.
