Die Häuser in der Wand

Am dritten Tag sah Polly Häuser in der Felswand. Sie waren klein und eckig, hoch oben in einer großen Höhle im Stein.

On the third day, Polly saw houses in the cliff. They were small and square, high up in a big hollow in the rock.

Ein Eichhörnchen erzählte ihr davon. Menschen bauten diese Räume aus Stein und Lehm, vor langer Zeit. Die Höhle war trocken und warm. Ein Raum ist hell, darum trägt er den Namen Weißes Haus.

A squirrel told her about them. People built these rooms from stone and mud, long ago. The hollow was dry and warm. One room is pale, so it has the name White House.

Haben hier früher Menschen gelebt, fragte Polly. Ja, sagte das Eichhörnchen. Menschen leben in diesem Canyon seit mehr als viertausend Jahren.

Did people live here before, asked Polly. Yes, said the squirrel. People have lived in this canyon for more than four thousand years.

Ein kleiner Weg führt von oben herunter. Es ist der einzige Weg, den man allein gehen kann. Polly saß und schaute den Schatten zu, wie sie sich bewegten.

One small path comes down from the top. It is the only path you can walk alone. Polly sat and watched the shadows move.
