Las casas en la pared

Al tercer día, Polly vio casas en el acantilado. Eran pequeñas y cuadradas, arriba en un gran hueco de la roca.

On the third day, Polly saw houses in the cliff. They were small and square, high up in a big hollow in the rock.

Una ardilla le contó sobre ellas. La gente construyó estos cuartos con piedra y barro, hace mucho tiempo. El hueco era seco y cálido. Un cuarto es pálido, por eso tiene el nombre Casa Blanca.

A squirrel told her about them. People built these rooms from stone and mud, long ago. The hollow was dry and warm. One room is pale, so it has the name White House.

¿Vivía gente aquí antes?, preguntó Polly. Sí, dijo la ardilla. La gente ha vivido en este cañón por más de cuatro mil años.

Did people live here before, asked Polly. Yes, said the squirrel. People have lived in this canyon for more than four thousand years.

Un camino pequeño baja desde arriba. Es el único camino que puedes caminar solo. Polly se sentó y miró las sombras moverse.

One small path comes down from the top. It is the only path you can walk alone. Polly sat and watched the shadows move.
