Ratsastajat saapuvat

Viidentenä päivänä ratsastajat saapuivat. Kuorma-autot tulivat tietä pitkin. Ne kuljettivat vesiskoottereita ja pitkiä, kapeita lautoja. Koirat juoksivat autojen vierellä. Lokit huusivat taivaalla.

On day five the riders arrived. Trucks came up the road. They carried jet skis and long, narrow surfboards. Dogs ran beside the trucks. Gulls called in the sky.

Vanhassa linnoituksessa on erityinen huone. Kuuluisat surffilaudat roikkuvat seinillä. Jokainen lauta ratsasti täällä valtavalla aallolla. Osa on rikki, mutta nekin roikkuvat siellä.

In the old fort there is a special room. Famous surfboards hang on the walls. Every board rode a giant wave here. Some are broken, but they hang there too.

In the afternoon, everyone looked at the sea. Seabirds sat in a row on the wall. The old albatross was there too. The sea rolled in slow, heavy lines. Tomorrow, the giants.

That night Polly stayed close to the warm lantern. The waves boomed in the dark. She slept only a little.
