The Riders Arrive

On day five the riders arrived. Trucks came up the road. They carried jet skis and long, narrow surfboards. Dogs ran beside the trucks. Gulls called in the sky.

五日目に、ライダーたちが来た。トラックが道をのぼってきた。トラックはジェットスキーと、長くて細いサーフボードを運んでいた。犬たちがトラックの横を走った。カモメが空で鳴いた。

In the old fort there is a special room. Famous surfboards hang on the walls. Every board rode a giant wave here. Some are broken, but they hang there too.

古い砦の中に、特別な部屋がある。有名なサーフボードが壁にかかっている。どのボードも、ここで大きな波に乗った。壊れたボードもあるが、やっぱり壁にかかっている。

In the afternoon, everyone looked at the sea. Seabirds sat in a row on the wall. The old albatross was there too. The sea rolled in slow, heavy lines. Tomorrow, the giants.

午後、みんなが海を見た。海鳥たちが壁に一列に並んだ。年をとったアホウドリもそこにいた。海は、ゆっくりと重く、うねっていた。明日は、大きな波が来る。

That night Polly stayed close to the warm lantern. The waves boomed in the dark. She slept only a little.

その夜、ポリーは暖かいランタンのそばにいた。波の音が暗闇の中でとどろいた。ポリーは少ししか眠れなかった。
