Grass Grown on Purpose
Polly learns that Central Park was built by hand on blasted rock, and that real sheep once ate the grass there.

Central Park did not happen by chance. Two people drew the whole plan on paper first. It looks like old nature, but people built all of it.
Under the park is hard rock. Workers could not dig through it by hand, so they used explosives, more than a famous old battle used. Every hill and pond was placed on purpose.
One big field once had real sheep that ate the grass short for seventy years. In nineteen thirty-four they were moved away, and their barn became a restaurant.
Near the lake is an old iron bridge from eighteen sixty-two. On calm evenings you can see its shape in the water. Polly watched squirrels run where the sheep once walked.
That's the story.
