The Houses in the Wall

On the third day, Polly saw houses in the cliff. They were small and square, high up in a big hollow in the rock.

Op de derde dag zag Polly huizen in de rotswand. Ze waren klein en vierkant, hoog in een grote holte in de rots.

A squirrel told her about them. People built these rooms from stone and mud, long ago. The hollow was dry and warm. One room is pale, so it has the name White House.

Een eekhoorn vertelde erover. Mensen bouwden deze kamers van steen en modder, lang geleden. De holte was droog en warm. Een kamer is bleek, dus de plek heet het Witte Huis.

Did people live here before, asked Polly. Yes, said the squirrel. People have lived in this canyon for more than four thousand years.

Woonden hier eerder ook mensen, vroeg Polly. Ja, zei de eekhoorn. Mensen wonen al meer dan vierduizend jaar in deze kloof.

One small path comes down from the top. It is the only path you can walk alone. Polly sat and watched the shadows move.

Een klein pad komt van boven naar beneden. Het is het enige pad dat je alleen mag lopen. Polly zat en keek naar de schaduwen.
