Where the Walls Stand Up

Polly flew into the canyon. The walls were much bigger now. The red rock went straight up. There was no way to climb it.

Polly vloog de kloof in. De wanden waren nu veel groter. De rode rots ging recht omhoog. Er was geen manier om te klimmen.

Dark lines ran down the wall. They looked like black ink. But they were not paint. Water and dust made them, very slowly, over a long time.

Donkere lijnen liepen langs de wand naar beneden. Ze leken op zwarte inkt. Maar het was geen verf. Water en stof maakten ze, heel langzaam, over een lange tijd.

Under the rock, Polly found many small nests made of mud. Hundreds of swallows lived there. Ride the wall, one bird said. The warm air goes up.

Onder de rots vond Polly veel kleine nesten van modder. Honderden zwaluwen woonden daar. Berijd de wand, zei een vogel. De warme lucht gaat omhoog.

So Polly rode the warm air. She did not move her wings. That evening, the cliff was more than a thousand feet high.

Dus reed Polly op de warme lucht. Ze bewoog haar vleugels niet. Die avond was de rotswand meer dan driehonderd meter hoog.
