Polly flog in die Schlucht. Die Wände waren jetzt viel größer. Der rote Fels ging steil nach oben. Es gab keinen Weg, ihn zu klettern.
Dunkle Linien liefen die Wand hinunter. Sie sahen aus wie schwarze Tinte. Aber es war keine Farbe. Wasser und Staub machten sie, ganz langsam, über eine lange Zeit.
Unter dem Fels fand Polly viele kleine Nester aus Lehm. Hunderte Schwalben lebten dort. Reite die Wand, sagte ein Vogel. Die warme Luft steigt nach oben.
Also ritt Polly auf der warmen Luft. Sie bewegte ihre Flügel nicht. An diesem Abend war die Felswand mehr als tausend Fuß hoch.
