When the Sun Goes Down

Polly wanted to sleep, but the forest had other plans. When the light left, the forest did not go quiet. It woke up. The night forest opened its eyes. Polly stayed awake and kept her green body still in the dark.

Polly wollte schlafen, aber der Wald hatte andere Pläne. Als das Licht ging, wurde der Wald nicht still. Er wachte auf. Der Wald der Nacht öffnete die Augen. Polly blieb wach und hielt ihren grünen Körper still im Dunkeln.

First came the sound. Frogs called from every leaf and pool. Then thousands of insects joined. The air was one wall of noise. At night the forest is louder than in the day. Animals that hide in the sun come out in the dark.

Zuerst kam der Klang. Frösche riefen von jedem Blatt und jeder Pfütze. Dann kamen Tausende Insekten dazu. Die Luft war eine Wand aus Lärm. In der Nacht ist der Wald lauter als am Tag. Tiere, die sich in der Sonne verstecken, kommen im Dunkeln heraus.

Then came the eyes. Small lights moved in the dark. They were animal eyes. Polly stayed very still. Below her, two big eyes passed slowly. This was their time, not hers. So Polly just watched.

Dann kamen die Augen. Kleine Lichter bewegten sich im Dunkeln. Es waren Tieraugen. Polly blieb ganz still. Unter ihr gingen zwei große Augen langsam vorbei. Das war die Zeit der Tiere, nicht Pollys Zeit. Also schaute Polly nur zu.

Late at night the warm rain came. It fell through the leaves. Polly sat under a big leaf. She listened to the rain and the frogs, and she fell asleep.

Spät in der Nacht kam der warme Regen. Er fiel durch die Blätter. Polly saß unter einem großen Blatt. Sie hörte den Regen und die Frösche, und sie schlief ein.
