The Dark Floor

The next day Polly flew down low. She went past the canopy, down to the floor. It was a different world. Almost no sun reached the ground. The light was dim and the air was cool. Her red head was the brightest thing there.

Am nächsten Tag flog Polly tief hinunter. Sie flog am Kronendach vorbei, bis zum Boden. Es war eine andere Welt. Fast keine Sonne kam zum Boden. Das Licht war schwach und die Luft war kühl. Ihr roter Kopf war das Hellste dort.

A line of green moved on the dark soil. Polly looked closer. They were ants. Each one carried a piece of leaf, like a small green sail. They are leafcutter ants. They are farmers. They grow a special fungus and eat it.

Eine grüne Linie bewegte sich über die dunkle Erde. Polly schaute genauer hin. Es waren Ameisen. Jede trug ein Stück Blatt, wie ein kleines grünes Segel. Es sind Blattschneiderameisen. Sie sind Bauern. Sie züchten einen besonderen Pilz und fressen ihn.

On the floor, nothing is wasted. Old leaves, wood, and fruit break down fast. Then the trees use them again. The forest grows on its old parts.

Auf dem Boden wird nichts verschwendet. Alte Blätter, Holz und Früchte zerfallen schnell. Dann nutzen die Bäume sie wieder. Der Wald wächst auf seinen alten Teilen.

On a dark leaf, Polly saw something bright. It was a tiny frog, blue and black. Bright skin means danger. Polly looked but did not touch.

Auf einem dunklen Blatt sah Polly etwas Helles. Es war ein winziger Frosch, blau und schwarz. Helle Haut bedeutet Gefahr. Polly schaute, aber sie fasste ihn nicht an.
