El suelo oscuro

Al día siguiente, Polly voló muy abajo. Pasó el dosel y bajó hasta el suelo. Era un mundo diferente. Casi nada de sol llegaba al suelo. La luz era tenue y el aire era fresco. Su cabeza roja era lo más brillante de allí.

The next day Polly flew down low. She went past the canopy, down to the floor. It was a different world. Almost no sun reached the ground. The light was dim and the air was cool. Her red head was the brightest thing there.

Una línea verde se movía sobre la tierra oscura. Polly miró de cerca. Eran hormigas. Cada una llevaba un trozo de hoja, como una vela verde pequeña. Son hormigas cortadoras de hojas. Son granjeras. Cultivan un hongo especial y lo comen.

A line of green moved on the dark soil. Polly looked closer. They were ants. Each one carried a piece of leaf, like a small green sail. They are leafcutter ants. They are farmers. They grow a special fungus and eat it.

En el suelo, nada se desperdicia. Las hojas viejas, la madera y la fruta se deshacen rápido. Después los árboles las usan otra vez. La selva crece sobre sus partes viejas.

On the floor, nothing is wasted. Old leaves, wood, and fruit break down fast. Then the trees use them again. The forest grows on its old parts.

Sobre una hoja oscura, Polly vio algo brillante. Era una rana pequeña, azul y negra. La piel brillante significa peligro. Polly miró, pero no la tocó.

On a dark leaf, Polly saw something bright. It was a tiny frog, blue and black. Bright skin means danger. Polly looked but did not touch.
