The Editor of Itself

On the sixth morning, Chiara made coffee. She sat by the tank with Polly.

Am sechsten Morgen machte Chiara Kaffee. Sie saß mit Polly am Becken.

Pasta was hanging upside down. Her body pulsed slowly. Her arms drifted.

Pasta hing kopfüber. Ihr Körper pulsierte langsam. Ihre Arme trieben umher.

"I want to tell you one more thing," Chiara said. "It is the strangest thing I know about octopuses."

"Ich möchte dir noch etwas erzählen", sagte Chiara. "Es ist das Seltsamste, was ich über Oktopusse weiß."

DNA is the long-term plan of an animal. RNA is the working copy.

DNA ist der langfristige Plan eines Tieres. RNA ist die Arbeitskopie.

In most animals, the RNA matches the DNA. But in octopuses, the RNA does not match. The cell rewrites parts of the RNA as it makes it. Most of the edits happen in the nervous system.

Bei den meisten Tieren stimmt die RNA mit der DNA überein. Aber bei Oktopussen ist das nicht der Fall. Die Zelle schreibt Teile der RNA um, während sie sie herstellt. Die meisten Änderungen passieren im Nervensystem.

"Why?" Chiara said. "It lets the octopus change its nervous system. It can tune its own brain to the water temperature or to its food."

"Warum?", sagte Chiara. "Es ermöglicht dem Oktopus, sein Nervensystem zu verändern. Er kann sein eigenes Gehirn an die Wassertemperatur oder seine Nahrung anpassen."

Pasta drifted. Her skin near the eyes turned soft pink and brown.

Pasta trieb umher. Ihre Haut in der Nähe der Augen wurde sanft rosa und braun.

"Each octopus is a slightly different animal," Chiara said. "Same DNA. But the working machinery is built fresh, for that water and that food."

"Jeder Oktopus ist ein etwas anderes Tier", sagte Chiara. "Gleiche DNA. Aber die Arbeitsmaschinerie wird frisch gebaut, für dieses Wasser und diese Nahrung."

Polly thought about her own brain. It was hers. She did not want it to change. But she liked knowing that animals like Pasta existed.

Polly dachte über ihr eigenes Gehirn nach. Es gehörte ihr. Sie wollte nicht, dass es sich verändert. Aber sie fand es gut zu wissen, dass es Tiere wie Pasta gibt.
