Curaçao is een klein eiland in de Caribische Zee, met minder dan honderdzestigduizend inwoners. Dat is kleiner dan menige gewone stad. Toch deed Curaçao deze juni iets wat geen enkel land van die grootte ooit had gedaan. Het plaatste zich voor het WK, brak een record dat ooit van IJsland was en werd het kleinste land ooit dat het toernooi haalde.
Jarenlang juichten mensen op het eiland voor Brazilië of Argentinië, omdat hun eigen team er nooit bij was. Deze keer juichten ze voor zichzelf. Hun bondscoach, Dick Advocaat, is achtenzeventig jaar oud, de oudste coach in de WK-geschiedenis. In hun eerste wedstrijd stond hij tegenover Duitsland en een coach die precies veertig jaar jonger was, het grootste leeftijdsverschil tussen twee coaches dat het toernooi ooit heeft gezien.

Livano Comenencia maakte het eerste doelpunt van het eiland op welk WK dan ook, een moment dat op Curaçao herinnerd zal worden lang nadat de eindstand vergeten is. Soms is er alleen al bij zijn de echte overwinning.
