Más abajo hay alguien más en los escalones. Una zorra sube desde el fondo. Lleva un metro y un cuaderno. Se para en cada escalón y lo mide. Polly se aparta.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

Estos escalones los tallaron a mano. No hay dos iguales. Algunos son altos. Otros son muy bajos.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Y aquí viene la parte divertida. Nadie sabe cuántos escalones hay. Una oficina dice ciento ochenta y siete. Otra oficina dice ciento ochenta y nueve. Las dos son oficiales.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Polly mira la larga línea de piedra. Decide creerse el número más alto.
