Weiter unten ist noch jemand auf den Stufen. Ein Fuchs kommt von unten hoch. Sie hat ein Lineal und ein Notizbuch. Sie bleibt bei jeder Stufe stehen und misst sie. Polly geht zur Seite.

Further down, somebody else is on the steps. A fox comes up from below. She has a ruler and a notebook. She stops at every step and measures it. Polly moves to one side.

Menschen haben diese Stufen von Hand geschnitten. Keine zwei Stufen sind gleich. Manche sind hoch. Manche sind sehr niedrig.

People cut these steps by hand. No two steps are the same. Some are high. Some are very low.

Und hier kommt der lustige Teil. Niemand weiß, wie viele Stufen es gibt. Ein Amt sagt hundertsiebenundachtzig. Ein anderes Amt sagt hundertneunundachtzig. Beide sind offiziell.

Here is the funny part. Nobody knows how many steps there are. One office says one hundred and eighty seven. Another office says one hundred and eighty nine. Both are official.

Polly schaut die lange Reihe aus Stein hinunter. Sie entscheidet sich, die größere Zahl zu glauben.
