Los caballos del cañón

En la cuarta mañana, Polly se despertó con un sonido como de trueno. Pero no había nubes en el cielo. El sonido rodaba por el cañón y sacudía su rama. Miró hacia abajo. El trueno tenía patas. Un grupo de caballos corría sobre la arena plana.

On the fourth morning, Polly woke to a sound like thunder. But there were no clouds in the sky. The sound rolled along the canyon and shook her branch. She looked down. The thunder had legs. A group of horses was running on the flat sand.

Polly voló junto a una joven yegua marrón que iba atrás. ¿Adónde van?, preguntó. A ningún lado, dijo la yegua alegremente. Solo corremos aquí. Los caballos han vivido en este cañón desde hace mucho tiempo. Algunos pertenecen a las familias que cultivan la tierra por aquí. Otros pertenecen al cañón mismo.

Polly flew next to a young brown mare at the back. Where are you going, she asked. Nowhere, said the mare happily. We just run here. Horses have lived in this canyon for a long time. Some belong to the families who farm here. Some belong to the canyon.

Polly entendió por qué corrían allí. La arena era suave y plana, y se extendía por millas entre las paredes. Y el ruido era maravilloso. El sonido golpeaba una pared, rebotaba en la otra, y hacía que veinte caballos sonaran como doscientos.

Polly understood why they ran here. The sand was soft and flat, and it went on for miles between the walls. And the noise was wonderful. The sound hit one wall, came back off the other, and made twenty horses sound like two hundred.

Por fin los caballos redujeron el paso. Un arroyo delgado corría por el medio de toda aquella arena seca. Los caballos se detuvieron en el agua y bebieron. Polly se posó en la arena tibia junto a ellos y no dijo nada en absoluto.

At last the horses slowed down. A thin stream ran through the middle of all that dry sand. The horses stood in the water and drank. Polly landed on the warm sand next to them and said nothing at all.
