Las casas de las palomas

Al amanecer siguiente, el viento llevó el globo a un valle estrecho. Las paredes estaban llenas de pequeños agujeros tallados, fila tras fila, como ventanitas sin cristal.

The next dawn, the wind carried the balloon into a narrow valley. The walls were full of small carved holes, row after row, like tiny windows without glass.

"Casas de palomas", dijo el piloto. "Durante cientos de años, los campesinos tallaron cuartitos para las palomas. Los pájaros dormían seguros dentro, y su abono hacía crecer las viñas y los huertos."

"Pigeon houses," said the pilot. "For hundreds of years, farmers carved little rooms for the pigeons. The birds slept safe inside, and their droppings made the vineyards and gardens grow."

Polly voló de la cesta a la pared del valle. Entró en un cuartito de palomas y miró hacia fuera. Las palomas grises arrullaban a su alrededor. Desde su puerta pequeña, todo el valle brillaba con la luz de la mañana.

Polly flew from the basket to the valley wall. She stepped inside one little pigeon room and looked out. Grey pigeons cooed all around her. From their small door, the whole valley glowed in the morning light.

Volvió volando a la cesta, y el piloto dejó subir el globo. "¿Lo sientes?", dijo. "Aquí arriba el viento va en otra dirección." Polly cerró los ojos y sintió el aire girar despacio a su alrededor.

She flew back to the basket, and the pilot let the balloon climb. "Do you feel that?" he said. "Up here the wind goes another way." Polly closed her eyes and felt the air turn slowly around them.
