Am nächsten Morgen trug der Wind den Ballon in ein enges Tal. Die Wände waren voller kleiner Löcher, Reihe über Reihe, wie winzige Fenster ohne Glas.
"Taubenhäuser", sagte der Pilot. "Hunderte von Jahren haben die Bauern kleine Zimmer für die Tauben geschnitten. Die Vögel schliefen sicher darin, und ihr Dünger ließ die Weinberge und Gärten wachsen."
Polly flog vom Korb zur Talwand. Sie schlüpfte in ein kleines Taubenzimmer und schaute hinaus. Graue Tauben gurrten um sie herum. Von ihrer kleinen Tür aus leuchtete das ganze Tal im Morgenlicht.
Sie flog zurück zum Korb, und der Pilot ließ den Ballon steigen. "Spürst du das?", sagte er. "Hier oben geht der Wind in eine andere Richtung." Polly schloss die Augen und fühlte, wie sich die Luft langsam um sie drehte.
