El techo del mundo

Por la mañana, Polly voló a lo más alto de la selva. En el suelo todo es oscuro y quieto. Pero allá arriba había mucho sol. Las hojas brillaban y las flores colgaban en el aire. Las alas azul turquesa de Polly brillaron. Esta parte de arriba es el dosel.

In the morning Polly flew to the top of the forest. On the ground it is dark and still. But up high it was full of sun. Leaves shone and flowers hung in the air. Polly's blue-teal wings flashed. This top part is the canopy.

Casi todos los animales de la selva viven aquí arriba. Los monos corrían por las ramas. Los perezosos colgaban quietos y comían hojas despacio. Pájaros de muchos colores volaban de árbol en árbol. Casi nunca tocan el suelo.

Most rainforest animals live up here. Monkeys ran along the branches. Sloths hung still and ate leaves slowly. Birds of many colors flew from tree to tree. They almost never touch the ground.

Había mucho ruido y mucha luz. Los loros y los tucanes gritaban desde las ramas altas. Sus plumas eran rojas, doradas y azules. Polly voló con ellos. Aquí sus colores brillantes eran normales.

It was very loud and bright. Parrots and toucans called from the high branches. Their feathers were red, gold, and blue. Polly flew with them. Here her bright colors were normal.

Un árbol gigante estaba muy por encima de los demás. Polly voló hasta arriba y descansó. Podía ver la selva en todas las direcciones. A lo lejos, una lluvia gris caía sobre el verde.

One giant tree stood high above the rest. Polly flew to the top and rested. She could see the forest in every direction. Far away, grey rain fell on the green.
