船が入ってくる

朝の船がストロムネスに着いた。家々は海に背を向けて建っている。ポリーは濡れた敷石に降りて、風というものがわかった。強い風が一度ふくのではない。ここではいつも風がふいている。桟橋のはしにコリー犬がすわっていた。ポリーはそばへ行った。「道を教えてもらえますか。」

The morning boat tied up at Stromness. The houses stand with their backs to the water. Polly stepped onto wet flagstones and understood the wind. It was not a gust. It was a condition. A collie sat at the end of the pier. Polly went over to him. "Can you show me the way?"

犬は、どこへ行きたいのかと聞いた。ポリーはまだ決めていなかった。島は七十ちかくあり、人が住んでいるのは二十ほどだ。森はなく、遠くまで高いものは何もない。「バスにはどこで乗れるか教えていただけますか。」とポリーは聞いた。犬は坂の上の待合所のほうへ首をむけた。
