Basta una lunga salita per vedere tutta la città in un solo colpo d'occhio. C'è il castello sulla collina, con i tetti chiari e le lunghe mura. C'è il giardino verde scuro accanto a esso. C'è il basso tetto del mercato tra edifici più alti. Oltre il fiume c'è la piccola griglia di legno della strada delle case da tè. Dietro tutto, il mare è piatto e argenteo.

One long climb puts the whole city in a single view. There is the castle on its hill, with pale roofs and long walls. There is the dark green garden beside it. There is the low roof of the market among taller buildings. Across the river lies the small wooden grid of the teahouse street. Beyond it all, the sea is flat and silver.

Quello che sopravvive qui non sono davvero i monumenti. Molte città li hanno, ricostruiti in cemento dopo la guerra. A Kanazawa sopravvive l'ordinario. Un mercato che vende ancora pesce a chi lo cucina. Un mestiere con clienti veri. Una strada dove qualcuno prova al piano di sopra perché quella sera c'è lavoro. La città ha conservato le sue abitudini oltre ai suoi edifici.

What survives here is not really the monuments. Many cities have those, rebuilt in concrete after the war. What survives in Kanazawa is ordinary. A market that still sells fish to people who cook it. A craft with real customers. A street where someone practises upstairs because there is work that night. The city kept its habits as well as its buildings.
