C'è un caffè dove il tuo caffè è in un paese e la tua torta in un altro. Si trova in una piccola città chiamata Baarle, dove il confine tra il Belgio e i Paesi Bassi non gira educatamente intorno alle case. Le attraversa. Croci bianche e borchie di metallo corrono lungo le strade, sulle soglie, sotto gli scaffali dei negozi e dritte attraverso i tavolini del caffè. Tagga l'amico che faresti sedere dall'altra parte del confine.
Com'è successo? Secoli fa, i signori locali scambiavano e regalavano pezzi di terra come si scambiano le carte. Il risultato è una città fatta di toppe. Piccole isole di Belgio stanno dentro i Paesi Bassi, e dentro alcune di quelle isole stanno isole ancora più piccole di terra olandese. Nessuno ha mai messo ordine, così il confine è rimasto, a zigzag attraverso la vita di ogni giorno.
La città ha imparato a divertirsi. La regola per le case è semplice, il tuo paese è dove sta la tua porta d'ingresso, e alcune case hanno due porte e due indirizzi. Al caffè, puoi tenere la tazza in un paese e appoggiarla nell'altro. Probabilmente è l'unico posto sulla Terra dove puoi lasciare il paese passando lo zucchero.
