Bei der nächsten Morgendämmerung trug der Wind den Ballon in ein schmales Tal. Die Wände auf beiden Seiten waren mit kleinen geschnitzten Löchern bedeckt, Reihe um Reihe, wie winzige Fenster ohne Glas.
"Taubenhäuser", sagte der Pilot. "Seit Hunderten von Jahren schnitzen die Bauern hier kleine Kammern in die Felswände für die Tauben. Die Vögel schliefen sicher darin, und ihr Kot wurde gesammelt, um die Weinberge und Gärten zu düngen."
Polly flog vom Korb hinüber zur Talwand und trat in eine der kleinen Kammern. Graue Tauben schlurften umher und gurrten in der dunklen, ausgehöhlten Nische. Gerahmt von der kleinen Türöffnung lag das ganze Tal glühend im Morgenlicht.
Sie flog zurück zum Korb, und der Pilot ließ den Ballon ein wenig höher steigen. "Spürst du das?", fragte er. "Hier oben weht der Wind in eine ganz andere Richtung." Polly schloss die Augen und spürte, wie sich die Luft langsam um sie drehte und in dieser Höhe anders wehte als noch einen Moment zuvor.
