Die steinernen Kamele

Polly hüpfte an der Wand entlang, neben dem kleinen Kanal. Plötzlich blieb sie stehen. Da waren Formen im Fels.

Polly hopped along the wall beside the little channel. Suddenly she stopped. There were shapes in the rock.

Kamele, in die Wand geschnitten, so groß wie echte Kamele. Neben ihnen gingen Männer aus Stein, die Händler von früher. Wind und Regen hatten ihre Gesichter glatt gerieben, aber die Beine der Kamele waren noch klar zu sehen.

Camels, carved into the wall, as large as real camels. Beside them walked carved men, the merchants of long ago. Wind and rain had worn their faces away, but the legs of the camels were still clear.

Polly stellte sich neben einen Kamelfuß aus Stein. Er war größer als sie selbst. Sie stellte sich die echten Karawanen vor, die hier vorbeizogen, voll mit Gewürzen und süßem Weihrauch.

Polly stood next to a carved camel foot. It was bigger than she was. She imagined the real caravans passing here, loaded with spices and sweet incense.

Der Wind zog durch die Schlucht und klang wie langsame Schritte. Polly hörte lange zu. Dann folgte sie dem Wasserkanal weiter.

The wind moved through the canyon and sounded like slow footsteps. Polly listened for a long time. Then she followed the water channel on.
