Am Mittag erreichte die Herde den Grumeti-Fluss. Alles stand still. Tausende von Gnus standen am Ufer und starrten auf das braune Wasser. Sie hatten Angst – und das zu Recht. In diesem Fluss leben Krokodile. Manche sind länger als ein kleines Boot. Sie warten das ganze Jahr auf diese eine Woche.
Dann sprang ein Tier. Das reichte. Hunderte von Körpern stürzten gleichzeitig ins Wasser. Überall Gischt und Lärm. Polly flog knapp über ihren Rücken hinweg, durch den kühlen Dunst. Ihre runden Brillengläser wurden vom Flusswasser nass.
Nicht jedes Tier erreichte das andere Ufer. Der Fluss behielt einige zurück. Polly beobachtete alles von einem Baum aus und schaute nicht weg. Die Krokodile sind nicht böse. Sie gehören dazu – zu diesem Land, zu seiner Ordnung, so wie es schon immer war.
Am Abend war alles vorbei. Die nassen Tiere kletterten das Ufer hinauf, schüttelten sich wie Hunde und begannen wieder, Gras zu fressen. Der Fluss wurde ruhig. Polly blieb auf ihrem Ast sitzen, bis die Sterne herauskamen.
