In der sechsten Nacht beobachtete Camila eine entfernte Galaxie. Ihr Name war NGC 1068. Sie ist eine der hellsten Galaxien nahe uns.
Im Zentrum dieser Galaxie ist ein großes Schwarzes Loch. Das Schwarze Loch frisst Gas. Das Gas spiralt hinein. Es wird sehr heiß. Es leuchtet. Das Schwarze Loch hat die Masse von zehn Millionen Sonnen. Es ist 47 Millionen Lichtjahre entfernt.
"Schau", sagte Camila. Sie zeigte Polly ein Bild. Da war ein heller Fleck mit zwei schwachen Loben. "Der helle Fleck ist das Zentrum der Galaxie. Die Loben sind Strahlen aus heißem Gas, vom Schwarzen Loch ausgeworfen."
Polly neigte ihre Brille.
"Wir betrachten diese Galaxie aus 47 Millionen Jahren in der Vergangenheit", sagte Camila. "Das Licht, das wir jetzt sehen, verließ die Galaxie damals. Es gab damals keine Menschen. Die Antarktis hatte noch Wälder."
Das Teleskop summte.
"Manchmal denke ich", sagte Camila leise, "dass Astronomie darum geht, sich klein und spät zu fühlen, und das dann tröstlich zu finden."
Polly neigte den Kopf. "Ich finde es nicht schlimm, klein zu sein", sagte sie. "Manchmal finde ich es schlimm, spät zu sein."
Camila lächelte. "Du bist nicht spät. Das Licht ist seit 47 Millionen Jahren unterwegs, um hierherzukommen. In gewisser Weise passiert die Galaxie heute Nacht."
Die Magellanschen Wolken waren sichtbar. Sie sind kleine Galaxien nahe unserer. Ihr Licht ist älter als unsere Art.
