Walking Across the Floor of the Sea

Along the North Sea coast lies a strange and beautiful stretch of coastline known as the Wattenmeer, where the sea itself seems to change its mind twice a day. Each morning and again each afternoon, the water withdraws for kilometres, laying the seabed bare beneath the open sky. Walkers gather at its edge, remove their shoes, and step out onto what was, only hours earlier, the floor of the sea.

Langs de Noordzeekust ligt een vreemd en mooi stuk kustlijn dat bekendstaat als de Waddenzee, waar de zee zelf twee keer per dag van gedachten lijkt te veranderen. Elke ochtend en opnieuw elke middag trekt het water zich kilometers terug, waardoor de zeebodem onder de open lucht bloot komt te liggen. Wandelaars verzamelen zich aan de rand, doen hun schoenen uit en stappen op wat, slechts uren eerder, nog de bodem van de zee was.

The mud is soft and startlingly cool underfoot, squeezing up between the toes with every step. Far from being empty, the flats teem with quiet life: tiny shells, scurrying crabs, and the curling casts that worms leave behind in the wet ground. A guide leads each group towards a distant island, checking the time constantly, for the exposed seabed is never truly given, only lent by the sea for a few short hours at a stretch.

Het slik is zacht en verrassend koel onder je voeten, en het kruipt bij elke stap tussen je tenen omhoog. Verre van leeg wemelt het wad van stil leven: piepkleine schelpjes, wegschietende krabben en de kronkelige hoopjes die wormen achterlaten in de natte grond. Een gids leidt elke groep naar een ver eiland en checkt voortdurend de tijd, want de drooggevallen bodem wordt nooit echt gegeven, alleen even geleend door de zee voor een paar korte uren.

Then, inevitably, the tide turns. The water returns far faster than most visitors expect, racing back across the flats in bright silver lines. This is precisely why nobody attempts the crossing alone. Only the guide knows the safe routes and the narrow windows in which to use them, which is what allows each group to reach firm ground again well before the sea quietly reclaims its floor.

Dan keert, onvermijdelijk, het tij. Het water komt veel sneller terug dan de meeste bezoekers verwachten en raast in heldere zilveren lijnen weer over het wad. Precies daarom waagt niemand de oversteek alleen. Alleen de gids kent de veilige routes en de smalle tijdsvensters waarin je ze kunt gebruiken, en dat is wat elke groep in staat stelt om, ruim voordat de zee haar bodem weer opeist, veilig vaste grond te bereiken.
