The Station Nobody Rides Through

The first subway line opened under the city in nineteen oh four. It runs day and night, every day of the year, and almost never closes. Polly followed a train down under the street.

A primeira linha de metrô abre debaixo da cidade em mil novecentos e quatro. Ela funciona dia e noite, todos os dias do ano, e quase nunca fecha. Polly seguiu um trem para debaixo da rua.

The first station was built to look nice, with light from glass in the sidewalk above and a curved tile ceiling like a church.

A primeira estação foi feita para ser bonita, com luz de vidro na calçada acima e um teto de azulejos curvo, como uma igreja.

But the platform bends in a sharp curve, built for short trains. New trains were longer, with doors in the middle too, and opening them there was not safe. The station closed at the end of nineteen forty-five.

Mas a plataforma faz uma curva forte, feita para trens curtos. Os trens novos eram mais compridos, com portas no meio também, e abrir as portas ali não era seguro. A estação fechou no fim de mil novecentos e quarenta e cinco.

Nobody removed it. The tile and lamps are still there in the dark. Trains still pass through, but nobody gets off. Polly watched one more train go by.

Ninguém tirou nada dali. Os azulejos e as luzes ainda estão lá, no escuro. Os trens ainda passam, mas ninguém desce. Polly viu mais um trem passar.
