The River That Circles the Town

The town of Albarracín has its own moat. The river Guadalaviar makes a big loop around the rock. The town sits inside the loop, like a castle inside a ring of water. Today Polly wants a slow day. She goes down to visit the river.

De stad Albarracín heeft zijn eigen slotgracht. De rivier de Guadalaviar maakt een grote lus om de rots. De stad ligt in de lus, als een kasteel in een ring van water. Vandaag wil Polly een langzame dag. Ze gaat naar beneden om de rivier te bezoeken.

Down in the gorge the air is cool. Trees lean over the water. Blue dragonflies fly above the shallow places. The river works on the rock, slowly, like it has done for ages. The air smells green and fresh. Polly walks the small path along the water.

Beneden in de kloof is de lucht koel. Bomen leunen over het water. Blauwe libellen vliegen boven de ondiepe plekken. De rivier werkt aan de rots, langzaam, zoals hij al eeuwen doet. De lucht ruikt groen en fris. Polly loopt over het kleine pad langs het water.

All afternoon she does nothing important. She watches little insects walk on the water. She listens to the river's different sounds. High above her, the pink houses look down from the rock, over their wooden balconies.

De hele middag doet ze niets belangrijks. Ze kijkt naar kleine insecten die over het water lopen. Ze luistert naar de verschillende geluiden van de rivier. Hoog boven haar kijken de roze huizen naar beneden vanaf de rots, over hun houten balkons.

When it gets dark, a fox comes to drink at the other side. Polly and the fox look at each other over the water. Nobody hurries. Then the fox disappears, and Polly flies slowly home. It was a perfect day, and nothing happened at all.

Als het donker wordt, komt een vos drinken aan de andere kant. Polly en de vos kijken naar elkaar over het water. Niemand heeft haast. Dan verdwijnt de vos, en Polly vliegt langzaam naar huis. Het was een perfecte dag, en er is helemaal niets gebeurd.
