Curacao is a small island in the Caribbean Sea, home to fewer than one hundred and sixty thousand people. That is smaller than many ordinary towns. Yet this June, Curacao did something no nation its size had ever done. It qualified for the World Cup, breaking a record once held by Iceland and becoming the smallest country ever to reach the tournament.
For years, people on the island had cheered for Brazil or Argentina, because their own team had never made it. This time they cheered for themselves. Their coach, Dick Advocaat, is seventy eight years old, the oldest coach in World Cup history. In their first match he faced Germany and a coach exactly forty years younger, the largest age gap between two coaches the tournament has ever seen.
Germany were far too strong and won by seven goals to one. But Curacao scored too. Livano Comenencia struck the island's first goal in any World Cup, a moment that will be remembered on Curacao long after the final score is forgotten. Sometimes simply arriving is the real victory.
