La última parte de la escalera es distinta. La roca ya no está seca. Se vuelve más oscura y más fría bajo sus patas. Hay olor a piedra mojada. Al fondo hay una cueva baja, y la luz del agua se mueve por su techo.
Y allí, justo al lado del mar, sale agua dulce de la roca. Polly la prueba. Está fría y es dulce. No debería estar ahí. Y es la razón de todo lo que hay por encima de ella.
Funciona así. La tierra de encima del acantilado es caliza. La lluvia no resbala sobre la caliza. Se hunde dentro. El agua encuentra grietas pequeñas y baja por dentro de la piedra. El agua dulce pesa menos que el agua del mar, así que puede bajar hasta el pie del acantilado y llegar todavía dulce.
Ahora la escalera tiene sentido. No fueron soldados, y no fue una noche. Probablemente fueron monjes, cortando despacio durante años para llegar a esta agua. Un pueblo en un acantilado puede tener murallas altas y buenas vistas y aun así no tener nada que beber.
