El viento llega primero. Polly vuela hacia el sur por la costa de Córcega hasta que la isla se acaba. Delante de ella hay mar abierto, y muy lejos otra isla, baja y azul. Esa es Cerdeña. El agua entre las dos se llama el Estrecho de Bonifacio, y el viento sopla fuerte por allí.
Se gira y ve el pueblo. Está sobre un acantilado blanco, justo en el borde. Las casas son altas y estrechas, con las contraventanas cerradas. Entonces Polly nota algo extraño. No hay espacio en la base de los muros. La piedra de las casas continúa directamente en la piedra del acantilado. Y el acantilado cae unos setenta metros hasta el mar.
Polly se posa en la vieja muralla y mira hacia abajo. La roca es pálida y seca. Las gaviotas vuelan en círculos muy por debajo de ella. Entonces ve algo extraño. Alguien ha tallado una línea estrecha en el acantilado, y dentro de esa línea hay escalones.
Intenta contarlos, pero se está yendo la luz. Los escalones bajan y bajan hacia la sombra. El mar se mueve contra la roca. Polly piensa: voy a bajar allí.
