Aquella mañana Polly intentó contar los globos y perdió la cuenta poco después de sesenta. "¿Cuántos pueden volar?", preguntó. "El cielo de aquí se divide en tres partes", dijo el piloto, "y solo hay ciento cincuenta y cuatro vuelos cada día. A cada uno le toca un lugar, y así todos están seguros."
Debajo de cada globo, una camioneta de rescate iba siguiéndolo por los caminos polvorientos. El piloto hablaba por la radio y el equipo respondía desde allá abajo, sin perder de vista el globo ni un instante, como una familia que vigila una cometa que no quiere perder.
Luego llegó el aterrizaje. La camioneta se detuvo en un campo, con un remolque plano enganchado detrás. El piloto soltó un chorro de fuego, esperó, y dejó que el globo bajara. Despacio, con mucho cuidado, la canasta descendió y quedó justo encima del remolque.
Los pasajeros lanzaron gritos de alegría. El equipo recogió la enorme tela del globo a brazadas, la dobló bien plana y la guardó. Polly se sentó sobre el hombro del piloto mientras todos celebraban bajo el sol de la mañana, que ya llevaba un buen rato en el cielo.
