Desde su árbol, Polly observó las largas filas de animales que pasaban sin fin. Llegaban de un extremo del mundo al otro. Así es la gran migración. Nunca termina.
Polly voló hacia el polvo que flotaba sobre la manada. Luego aterrizó en el lomo de un ñu enorme y lo montó como si fuera un barco. A nadie le importó. Por aquí, los pájaros pequeños viajan sobre los ñus todo el día. El polvo fue cubriendo poco a poco sus alas azul verdosas y sus gafas redondas de un color dorado.
Las manadas comen en un orden fijo. Las cebras comen primero. Tienen dientes fuertes y mastican el pasto alto y duro. Los ñus comen la parte del medio de la planta. Las gacelas llegan al final y comen los brotes tiernos y nuevos. Una sola llanura, tres comidas distintas, sin peleas.
Por la tarde, nubes oscuras fueron apareciendo en el norte. Los ñus pueden oler la lluvia desde muy lejos. La lluvia significa pasto fresco. Toda la manada giró en dirección a la tormenta. Polly saltó del lomo del ñu y buscó un árbol donde pasar la noche.
