What Really Carries Your Words Across an Ocean

At this moment, your messages are lying at the bottom of the ocean. Send a text to another continent and it does not, whatever the films have suggested, ascend to a satellite. It dives. Nearly all traffic between continents travels through cables resting on the sea floor, past shipwrecks and deep sea trenches, in a darkness that never lifts.
Each cable is remarkably modest, often no thicker than a garden hose. Within it, shielded by layers of steel and plastic, run slender glass fibres that carry your words as pulses of light. Specialised ships lay these cables slowly across entire oceans, and the routes are plotted the way roads are plotted: around underwater mountains, clear of fishing grounds, away from any seabed inclined to shift.
The system's enemies, it turns out, are not spies but sharks and ship anchors. Cables get bitten, snagged and buried, and when one breaks, a repair ship sails out, hooks it off the seabed, hauls it aboard, and splices the glass back together in a floating workshop. So tonight, when you message someone on the far side of an ocean, consider the journey your words are about to make: a flash of light travelling the length of an ocean floor, inside a thread of glass.
