The Salt Place is Safe

The morning is very clear. Polly sits on the car. She watches the sun come up. The water makes the salt flat like a mirror. The sky looks beautiful in the water.

La mañana está muy clara. Polly está en el carro. Ella mira el sol. El agua hace la sal plana. El cielo se ve bonito.

Joaquín comes out of his house. He carries a bag. "We go to the salt now," he says. "The water will go away soon."

Joaquín sale de su casa. Él lleva una bolsa. "Vamos a la sal ahora," dice él. "El agua se va pronto."

Elena comes too. She has salt tools now. She is happy. She knows what to do.

Elena viene también. Ella tiene herramientas de sal. Ella está feliz. Ella sabe qué hacer.

They drive to the salt place. People worked all night. They made new salt hills. The salt is clean now. Government people are there. They write about the bad company.

"The mining company is going away," Elena says. "They will come back later. But we will be ready."

"We make a group," Joaquín says. "Salt workers and scientists work together. We protect this place."

"Hacemos un grupo," dice Joaquín. "Trabajadores de sal y científicos trabajan juntos. Protegemos este lugar."

They work with the salt. Joaquín teaches Polly about salt. Elena writes everything down. This is how change happens. People work together every day.

Ellos trabajan con la sal. Joaquín enseña a Polly sobre sal. Elena escribe todo. Así pasa el cambio. La gente trabaja junta cada día.

"The salt remembers everything," Joaquín says. "What will it remember about us?"

"La sal recuerda todo," dice Joaquín. "¿Qué va a recordar de nosotros?"

Elena points around them. "It will remember we cared. We protected this place."

Elena señala alrededor. "Va a recordar que cuidamos. Protegimos este lugar."

Polly must go now. Elena gives her salt for good luck. Polly flies up high. She sees the big salt flat below. The people saved their home. The salt place is safe.

Polly tiene que irse ahora. Elena le da sal para buena suerte. Polly vuela muy alto. Ella ve el lugar grande de sal abajo. La gente salvó su casa. El lugar de sal está seguro.
