Shadows and Secrets

The morning sun shone through La Boqueria market's high ceiling. Long shadows fell across the fruit stands. Polly the parrot sat on top of some oranges, watching carefully.
Valentina moved between her fruit displays with practiced ease. She had been doing this for years. Suddenly, she spoke to Esteban without looking at him.
"Your Manchego cheese," she said. "Did it have the official seal?"
The question hung in the air like a heavy smell. Esteban's face grew tight. "Of course it did. Every cheese I sell is real. Why do you ask?"
Valentina touched a star fruit with her fingers. Her jade pins caught the light when she moved her head. "I'm just curious. I've heard stories about fake cheeses in European markets. We must be careful these days."
Polly gripped the orange beneath her more tightly. Something about the way Valentina said 'fake' seemed important. The parrot's instincts told her they were talking about something bigger than stolen cheese.
"Who told you these stories?" Polly asked sharply.
For the first time, Valentina looked worried. Her hand stopped moving, and her dark eyes showed fear. "People who lost everything because of forgeries," she said quietly. "People whose families were destroyed by liars."
The market's noise seemed to fade away. Even the loud fish sellers couldn't break the silence around them.
Esteban stepped forward, his old face showing confusion and suspicion. "What are you really doing here, Valentina? I've been in this market for thirty years, and I know when someone is hiding something."
She laughed, but it sounded like breaking glass. "Maybe I'm running. Or maybe I'm hunting." She looked at Esteban's empty cheese display. "How well do you really know your suppliers?"
Before he could answer, police officers appeared at the market entrance. They moved through the crowd toward them.
Valentina's face went pale. "They're early," she whispered.
She quickly pulled out a hidden testing device from under her fruits. It had INTERPOL's official seal on it.
"You're not really a fruit seller," Esteban said, understanding finally.
Valentina smiled sadly. "And your Manchego wasn't really from La Mancha either."
