The Mystery of the Missing Manchego

Esteban was cutting thin slices of jamón when his hands started shaking. Polly the parrot watched him with her bright green eyes. She noticed something was wrong because he kept looking toward the back of his stall.

Esteban estaba cortando lonchas finas de jamón cuando sus manos empezaron a temblar. Polly la cotorra lo observaba con sus ojos verdes brillantes. Se dio cuenta de que algo andaba mal porque él seguía mirando hacia el fondo de su puesto.

"Something is bothering you, isn't it?" Polly asked, tilting her head.

The old man's shoulders dropped like he was carrying a heavy weight. "You're very smart for a bird," he said quietly. He put down his knife with a loud clink. "My best wheel of Manchego cheese disappeared this morning. It was aged for two years in special caves."

Polly's feathers stood up with excitement. In La Boqueria market, the vendors were like family, and stealing was almost impossible. Everyone followed an unspoken code of honor.

"Have you seen anything strange?" she asked, hopping closer to look at the empty space.

Esteban looked nervously at the fruit stall next to his. "There's a new vendor here," he whispered. "Her name is Valentina, and she sells exotic fruits from the Amazon. But something feels wrong about her."

Just then, a woman came out from behind some hanging dragon fruit. She was about thirty-five with black hair in a fancy bun. Her silk scarf had beautiful geometric patterns, and she moved like a cat.

En ese momento, una mujer salió de detrás de unas pitayas colgantes. Tenía unos treinta y cinco años con cabello negro recogido en un moño elegante. Su pañuelo de seda tenía patrones geométricos hermosos, y se movía como un felino.

"What's wrong about her?" Polly asked.

"¿Qué tiene de raro?" preguntó Polly.

"Her Spanish is too perfect," Esteban continued quietly. "Like she learned it from books, not from real life. Yesterday, I saw her looking at my cheese with too much interest."

"Su español es demasiado perfecto", continuó Esteban en voz baja. "Como si lo hubiera aprendido en libros, no en la vida real. Ayer la vi mirando mi queso con demasiado interés."

Valentina looked up and stared directly at Polly with dark, intelligent eyes. There was something secretive about her.

Valentina levantó la vista y miró directamente a Polly con ojos oscuros e inteligentes. Había algo misterioso en ella.

"Good morning, Esteban," she called out sweetly. "I see you have a colorful visitor today."

"Buenos días, Esteban", gritó dulcemente. "Veo que tienes una visitante muy colorida hoy."

Polly wondered if Valentina knew about her reputation for solving mysteries. This case was becoming more interesting than just missing cheese.
