The Cliff That Leans Over You

Polly goes further down. Then she notices something strange. There is less sky than before. She looks up. The cliff hangs out over her head. It is wider up there than down here. The town at the top is out of sight now.

Polly baja un poco más. Entonces nota algo extraño. Hay menos cielo que antes. Levanta la vista. El acantilado cuelga por encima de su cabeza. Es más ancho allí arriba que aquí abajo. El pueblo de la cima ya no se ve.

The sea did this, slowly, over a very long time. Waves hit the bottom of the cliff and take the rock away. Then the rock above has nothing to stand on. Along this coast the sea has made big caves in the cliffs. When a wave goes into a cave, Polly feels the sound through the stone under her feet.

El mar hizo esto, despacio, durante muchísimo tiempo. Las olas golpean la base del acantilado y se llevan la roca. Entonces la roca de arriba no tiene nada debajo. A lo largo de esta costa el mar ha hecho cuevas grandes en los acantilados. Cuando una ola entra en una cueva, Polly siente el sonido en la piedra bajo sus patas.

On the ledges below her there are dark green birds. They stand with their wings wide open to dry them in the wind. These birds are shags. Almost half of all the shags in the whole Mediterranean Sea nest along this coast and on the small islands out there.

En las repisas de más abajo hay aves de color verde oscuro. Están de pie con las alas bien abiertas para secarlas al viento. Son cormoranes moñudos. Casi la mitad de todos los cormoranes moñudos del mar Mediterráneo anidan en esta costa y en las islas pequeñas de allí.

Suddenly one of them drops off its ledge. It falls into the water and makes almost no splash. Polly waits. The bird stays under a long time. When it comes up again it is far away, and it has a fish.

De repente uno se deja caer de su repisa. Entra en el agua y casi no salpica. Polly espera. El ave tarda mucho en salir. Cuando sale, está muy lejos, y lleva un pez.
