The Colours of the Rock

At midday, the sun reached down into the canyon. The walls began to glow. Polly saw red, rose, orange, and honey, all in waves inside the stone.

Al mediodía, el sol llegó hasta el fondo del cañón. Las paredes empezaron a brillar. Polly vio rojo, rosa, naranja y miel, todo en ondas dentro de la piedra.

In the walls she found small carved doorways, no deeper than a nest. Inside each one stood a simple square stone. Travellers stopped here long ago to pray for a safe journey.

En las paredes encontró pequeñas puertas talladas, no más profundas que un nido. Dentro de cada una había una piedra simple y cuadrada. Los viajeros paraban aquí hace mucho tiempo para pedir un buen viaje.

A small pink bird landed beside her. It was a rosefinch, and its feathers were exactly the colour of the rock. The two birds looked at each other and said nothing.

Un pequeño pájaro rosa aterrizó a su lado. Era un camachuelo, y sus plumas eran exactamente del color de la roca. Los dos pájaros se miraron y no dijeron nada.

In the evening the colours grew deep and warm. Polly pressed her wing against the wall. The rock still held the heat of the day.

Por la tarde los colores se hicieron profundos y cálidos. Polly apoyó el ala en la pared. La roca todavía guardaba el calor del día.
