The Bird Cliffs

Polly flew west to the edge of the country, where tall cliffs drop into a grey sea. The cliffs were full of birds. Millions of seabirds nested there, calling all day like a noisy crowd. Polly flew in among them, her glasses wet with sea spray.

Polly flog nach Westen, an den Rand des Landes, wo hohe Klippen ins graue Meer fallen. Die Klippen waren voller Vögel. Millionen von Seevögeln hatten dort ihre Nester und schrien den ganzen Tag wie eine laute Menge. Polly flog zwischen ihnen, und ihre Brille wurde nass vom Meerwasser.

She loved the puffins best. They are small and round, with orange feet and striped beaks. They dig nests in the grass on top of the cliff. In the water, they fly down to catch fish. Polly saw one come up with many small fish in its beak.

Ihre Lieblinge waren die Papageitaucher. Sie sind klein und rund, mit orangen Füßen und gestreiften Schnäbeln. Sie bauen ihre Nester im Gras, oben auf der Klippe. Im Wasser tauchen sie hinunter und fangen Fische. Polly sah einen herauskommen, mit vielen kleinen Fischen im Schnabel.

Another bird lived there too: the arctic tern. It makes the longest trip of any animal. Every year it flies from the top of the world to the bottom and back, always chasing summer.

Dort lebte noch ein anderer Vogel: die Küstenseeschwalbe. Sie macht die längste Reise von allen Tieren. Jedes Jahr fliegt sie vom Dach der Welt bis ans andere Ende und wieder zurück. Sie folgt immer dem Sommer.

In the long evening, the birds came home to the cliff. Polly found a quiet spot and watched the waves.

Am langen Nachmittag kamen die Vögel zur Klippe zurück. Polly fand einen ruhigen Platz und schaute den Wellen zu.
