The Sphere

Morning. Polly woke up under a tarp. The ship smelled of coffee.

Mañana. Polly se despertó bajo una lona. El barco olía a café.

On the deck, the small submarine was under bright lights. The crew were working.

En la cubierta, el pequeño submarino estaba bajo luces brillantes. La tripulación estaba trabajando.

A man with grey hair was beside the submarine. He had a small light in his mouth. He worked slowly.

Un hombre de cabello gris estaba al lado del submarino. Tenía una pequeña luz en la boca. Trabajaba despacio.

Polly hopped closer. The man saw her. "Hello," he said. Then he went back to work.

Polly se acercó. El hombre la vio. "Hola", dijo. Luego volvió al trabajo.

He was checking the round room inside the submarine. The room is small and round. The walls are very thick.

Estaba revisando la sala redonda dentro del submarino. La sala es pequeña y redonda. Las paredes son muy gruesas.

"Why is it round?" Polly asked. "Because the water pushes from every side," he said. "A box would break. A ball does not."

"¿Por qué es redonda?" preguntó Polly. "Porque el agua empuja desde todos lados", dijo él. "Una caja se rompería. Una esfera no."

The little windows were thick. They were made of plastic, not glass. Glass would crack.

Las pequeñas ventanas eran gruesas. Estaban hechas de plástico, no de vidrio. El vidrio se rompería.

The man checked the windows. He said they were tested in a big tank first. They had to be safe before the submarine went to sea.

El hombre revisó las ventanas. Dijo que primero las probaron en un gran tanque. Tenían que ser seguras antes de que el submarino fuera al mar.

"How long can the pilot stay?" Polly asked. "Four days if needed. The dive is about ten hours," he said.

"¿Cuánto tiempo puede quedarse el piloto?" preguntó Polly. "Cuatro días si es necesario. La inmersión dura unas diez horas", dijo él.

Polly watched his hands. They were strong and careful. Only a few people in the world build these submarines.

Polly observó sus manos. Eran fuertes y cuidadosas. Solo unas pocas personas en el mundo construyen estos submarinos.

The man finished. "There are only two of these in the world," he said. He patted the submarine and walked away.

El hombre terminó. "Solo hay dos de estos en el mundo", dijo. Acarició el submarino y se alejó.

Polly stayed. She looked at the small round room. It would soon go to the bottom of the deepest place on Earth.

Polly se quedó. Miró la pequeña sala redonda. Pronto iría al fondo del lugar más profundo de la Tierra.
